Eligibility

Age Limitations – For new pet insurance policies, any breed of dog or cat between the ages of 6 weeks and 14 years is eligible for accident and illness coverage. As policies renew, pets growing older than 14 will still be covered but a new policy is not available for a 17-year-old cat for example. Pets that are 15 years or more are only eligible for accident insurance.

14 Day Waiting Period – Coverage begins after a two-week wait period and requires a veterinarian exam within 12 months prior to the coverage start date. There is no further annual exam required thereafter.

Pre-existing Conditions – If a pet has a pre-existing illness or injury it won’t be covered. It is important to have the pet examined since some conditions may be undiagnosed and therefore may not be covered. To avoid any surprises, a medical history review can be arranged to provide a clear assessment from an insurance perspective. If a pet has diabetes, Feline Immunodefi ciency Virus, Feline Leukemia Virus, or Cushing’s Disease, it may still be eligible for accident insurance.
