ATV Insurance

All-terrain vehicles, also known as ATV’s, provide the rider with a fun, outdoor experience using a vehicle

that can negotiate practically any type of terrain such as dirt, sand, mud, and grass. ATV’s, whether they

are a three wheeler, four wheeler, quad, quad bike, are made with special low-pressure tires that offer

more stability at lower speeds than two-wheel motorcycles do.  This allows for more riding options to the

adventure seeker; but owners of ATV’s should also be aware of the importance of receiving proper insurance for their ATV. Insurance is essential for ATV owners for a variety of reasons including protecting against theft, damage, liability coverage, and uninsured motorists.

Types of ATV Insurance Coverages
A variety of insurance coverages are available to ATV owners to protect against a number of liabilities — all of which can help safeguard the owner from damage, theft, or other types of risks. Take a few minutes to read through each type of coverage and decide what insurance you feel would benefit you the most.

Full Coverage/Comprehensive

Full coverage for ATV’s, also known as comprehensive coverage, covers a wide variety of events or risk exposures. Comprehensive ATV coverage protects you from damage to your ATV whether from vandalism, fire or other extreme weather conditions. It also covers damage to parts of your ATV from other types of risks as well as providing coverage for theft; full coverage or comprehensive coverage combines protection from these risks as well as basic liability coverage.

Coverage for Collision
In the case of an accidental collision with your ATV, collision coverage may be required. This type of ATV insurance is beneficial in the event that you have an accident where your ATV collided with another ATV, parked vehicle, tree, rock, fence post, or other type of obstacle. Since ATV’s are typically used in remote areas, which may cause a higher risk of collision, this type of insurance is vital.

Coverage for Custom Accessories
If you have added custom accessories like paint, rims, saddlebags or other types of accessories, you’ll need custom accessories coverage. This type of ATV insurance plan will cover certain custom accessories whether it is a new, custom paint job or a new special seat. Commonly, any accessory which is not included in the original manufacturer’s version of the ATV, will be covered.

Liability Coverage
Basic liability coverage is essential for your ATV, and in many cases, mandatory. Liability coverage pays for property damage and bodily injury that has resulted from a collision or accident while operating the ATV; however this is usually only coverage for other individual’s injury or property damage, and typically not your own. Other all-terrain vehicle insurance plans will cover both your injury and damage and that of others.

Roadside Assistance Coverage
As you may have guessed, roadside assistance coverage is a supplemental insurance policy that is an optional way to have future roadside assistance covered such as minor labor or repairs if your ATV has broken down, or transportation to the nearest repair facility. This type of insurance policy gives you peace of mind when you are riding your ATV because you will have additional coverage in case your ATV has mechanical difficulties and you need assistance.

Theft Coverage
ATV’s have a history of being easily stolen when they are not properly protected because of their size and weight. For this reason, it is imperative that you purchase an additional insurance policy which will protect you from potential financial loss if your ATV does get stolen. It can be easily combines with other policies you choose to have for your ATV.

Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist
Underinsured or uninsured motorist insurance policies protect you from financial loss in the event of an accident with a motorist who does not have any kind of insurance or who is underinsured. This type of insurance policy goes beyond basic liability coverage by protecting you in case your ATV comes into contact with another vehicle. By having uninsured motorist coverage, you can relax knowing even in the event of an accident, you are covered.
Many states require at least basic liability insurance coverage for ATV’s, but even when it is not required by law, it is still recommended. Various insurance plans protect the owner from financial burdens if such things like accidents, collisions, theft, or other risks occur. By planning ahead and getting a comprehensive insurance package, you will have additional protection while enjoying your all-terrain vehicle.
